The Heritage South Trust was formed in 2013, emerging out of Southland’s first Heritage Forum in 2012.

  • To create an environment of collaboration in the heritage sector

  • To build skills and knowledge

  • To promote a more strategic approach for local heritage

  • To promote heritage, its appreciation, and the activities of heritage groups and organisations

The Heritage South vision is

Heritage South
defines heritage as

All things inherited from the past which we wish to pass on to future generations, which define the culture and character of the south including the living, tangible and intangible manifestations of past and present culture.

What we do.

At Heritage South, we weave the fabric of Southland's past into the present, celebrating our rich heritage throughout the year. March comes alive with the vibrant Southland Heritage Month, showcasing a kaleidoscope of activities and events that honour our legacy. Beyond, our calendar is dotted with workshops, seminars, and enlightening speaker events, fostering a community united by history.

Our commitment extends to the Southland Oral History Project, a testament to our dedication to preserving the voices of Southland and its people for generations to come. Through newsletters, social media, and our email community, we share the latest heritage happenings, connecting and supporting passionate heritage groups in their dedicated efforts to keep our stories alive.

Join us in our journey to celebrate, educate, and inspire, as we pay homage to the heritage that shapes us.
